How Important Is a Vehicle’s Horsepower?

Do you need more horsepower? How important is choosing a vehicle with a large amount of horsepower? Horsepower is a term that dates back to the 18th century. Engineer James Watt was trying to sell more steam engines. He wanted to calculate what it would take for one single horse to pull a certain amount of coal over a given time.

He used the coal mines for his experiment. Watt calculated that one horse could do 22,000 foot-pounds of work over one minute. He increased that to 33,000 foot-pounds for one minute. That became the standard for what we know as horsepower today.

Vehicle owners might understand this better for what their next car, truck or SUV will pull or haul. Vehicle owners who need to pull more weight will generally need more horsepower. Our staff at Larry H. Miller Nissan San Bernardino can help you get a stronger grasp of what each of our new and used vehicles bring to the table. We're here to help.
